The best way to check a food thermometer
Fill a glass with crushed ice, add enough clean water to fill the gaps, and stir. Insert the thermometer’s sensing area without touching the glass and wait for a stable reading. A proper ice bath should read 32°F / 0°C within the instrument’s stated tolerance.

A glass of mostly water with a few floating cubes is not the same as an ice slurry. This is a useful check at one temperature, not a complete calibration across the cooking range. Probe depth and response time vary by model. Infrared thermometers and refrigerator thermometers require different procedures.

Make the ice slurry
Fill the cup generously with crushed ice. Add water to fill gaps, keeping plenty of ice rather than making it float in a large water pool. Stir.
