The best way to bake a sweet potato

Scrub a sweet potato, pierce its skin with a fork, and bake on a tray at 400°F for about 45–60 minutes, until the center offers little resistance. Use the microwave alternative for one potato when time is short.

Before you choose

Choose similarly sized potatoes when cooking more than one. A large thick sweet potato can stay firm long after a smaller one softens, so treat time as a planning range. The microwave produces a different skin texture; use the oven when the roasted exterior matters.

Whole oven bake method

  1. Prepare the potato

Scrub and dry. Pierce the skin 5–6 times with a fork.

Look for Clean intact skin with small vent holes.

Preheat to 400°F and place the potato on a rimmed tray.

Look for A tray positioned to catch drips.

  3. Bake until soft

Begin checking around 45 minutes and continue as needed, often to 60 minutes.

Look for A fork enters the thick center easily.

  4. Split carefully

Let it settle briefly, then split lengthwise and fluff the interior. Add topping after checking a small bite’s temperature.

Fix common problems

Most common mistake

Ending the cook at a fixed minute even though the center is still firm.

Recovery 1

Center hard? Continue cooking and recheck the thickest point.

Recovery 2

Syrupy drips burning? Use a rimmed tray in the oven; clean only after cooling.

Common questions about this method

Can I cook several together?

Use similar sizes and test each potato separately. Microwave timing for one potato does not automatically scale to several.

Will the microwave give the same skin?

Expect a softer skin. Choose the oven when exterior texture matters and the microwave when a tender center is the main goal.
