The best way to steam green beans
Trim fresh green beans and place them in a steamer basket above boiling water. Cover and steam about 3–7 minutes, tasting a cooled bean to decide the finish. Drain and season after cooking.

The water should create steam below the beans, not submerge them. Thin young beans and thick mature beans soften at different speeds; begin checking early and keep cooking when a bean is still tougher than you want. This is a serving method, not a complete freezing or canning process.

Before you start
- Rinse and trim fresh beans before cooking.
- Check that the pot retains water throughout steaming.
- Lift the lid and basket away from your face with mitts.
Steamer basket method
Trim the beans
Rinse and remove stems. Leave whole or cut into similar lengths.
Look for Clean beans without hard stem ends.
Prepare steam
Add enough water below the basket and bring to a boil.
Look for Steam rises without water touching the beans.
Cover and cook
Add beans, cover, and steam about 3–7 minutes. Start checking early with a cooled bean.
Look for The tenderness you prefer without a tough center.
Drain and season
Lift the basket with mitts and let water drip away. Season after transferring.
Look for Hot beans without excess water.
Fix common problems
Letting the water reach above the basket and unintentionally boiling the bottom layer.
Beans tough? Continue in short increments and test again.
Pot ran dry? Turn off heat and let it cool before handling; use more water within the basket limit next time.
Common questions about this method
Can I steam frozen beans the same way?
Follow the frozen package’s cooking instructions. This timing is for fresh beans and should not replace instructions for a frozen product.
Is this enough preparation for freezing raw beans?
Freezing uses a specific blanching-and-cooling process. Do not assume a serving texture or time is the correct preservation process.
